Planning, Supervising Picnics For Children

Having a picnic for children is a great way of creating memories. It's something that the kids can get excited about and also help to organize. A picnic is a great way of spending either a couple of hours after school, as a change for dinner, or a full day during the school vacation.

Picnics don't have to be complicated with a lot of planning involved, a picnic for kids can be as simple as a rug in the yard or as involved as a day trip to one of the National Parks. With a simple back yard picnic, you can even let the kids do the organizing themselves. What will they eat and drink? Can they make their own picnic food? Encourage them to think of it as a picnic somewhere other than the yard so that they pack everything they need and don't need to keep returning to the house for things they've forgotten. Give them hints about what they might like to consider such as what they will put the food on, and drink from. This can be a great learning experience in the role of planning as well as a fun activity that can fill up a couple of hours before the actual picnic. The great thing about a back yard picnic is that if the weather changes and it begins to rain, the picnic can be relocated into the house and the rug set down on the floor in the den or a bedroom.

Organising a picnic for kids which is further afield will be better with your supervision to ensure that you leave home with everything that you need - but you can allow them to take the lead and only advise (and do a quick check that everything is packed before you leave!) on what they need to take for the location you have chosen. If the picnic is going to be some distance then have a discussion about what activities they will do once they get there. Will they play ball? Will they swim? Will they fish? Will they go nature spotting? What will happen if it rains? What equipment will they need to take - again don't lead this, just ask the questions and let them find the right things.

If they have decided that this will be a birthday party picnic for kids, you will need to ensure that the picnic is being held in a place where you can supervise the activities and have enough other parents going along to ensure everything is safe. You'll also need to ensure that all the invited children have transport, and that there are enough games planned (and party favors) so that everyone has a good time. As there are guests involved, you will need to take command of the food and drink, but allow the kids to guide your choices. If the party picnic is to be held beside water make sure that there are adults in attendance who are strong swimmers and if possible at least one who has some kind of training in water life saving.

A picnic for kids is a great way of spending time together, both planning and participating, and a fun way of giving them a little responsibility and allowing their creativity and imagination to come through.
